Cuttings are taken live from our very own thriving Bonnieheath lavender!

Growing from a cutting is easier than from seed, and more affordable than potted plants which are ready for transplant. If you are interested in planting a lot of lavender, this is the best method!

Lavender plant cuttings become available late May and most of June. They are about 3" to 7" long with a 1-inch woody portion. Depending on the time of year, the cutting may or may not have a flower on it.

French lavender varieties which exude a nice, subtle fragrance. They are not cold hardy plants and require proper care during the winter months. Once planted outside, these cold climate hardy plants should be covered if temperatures reach -20ºC.

English lavender varieties which have a stronger and sweeter aroma. They are cold hardy and can tolerate snow, frost and ice in winter and live for many years.

Steps to plant your lavender cuttings:
1) Use a pot with good soil. Lavender likes light sand and manure. We recommend 2/3 Potting Soil + 1/3 Perlite or Sand.

2) Plant cutting with woody stem completely under the dirt.

3) Water regularly ensuring the soil is always moist. Plant should never be soaked, and the pot should allow water to drain freely.

4) Place pot in the direct sun, indoors or outside.

How to care for your lavender cutting:
Lavender cuttings should remain in its pot until it is at least 5" tall with a 3" spread. Roots must be well established before the plant should be transplanted, do not rush this step. Once it reaches this size, it should be planted in a sunny spot preferably with sandy loam soil, it's the best type for lavender. Consistently water until roots establish in its new home, but be sure not to overwater as roots will rot. Lavender grows 18-20 inches high and 2 feet spread. Foliage and bright bluish-purple blooms are very aromatic.
